BTS, also known as Bangtan Boys, is a South Korean boy band formed in 2010 and composed of seven members: Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook. Debuting in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment, they started as a hip hop group but quickly expanded their sound to include various musical genres. Their lyrics often discuss themes such as mental health, youth, self-love, and the challenges of fame, drawing inspiration from literature, philosophy, and psychology. BTS has achieved global success, becoming the first Korean act to top the US Billboard 200 chart and earning numerous awards, including American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and multiple Grammy nominations. They hold records for album sales in South Korea, with Map of the Soul: 7 as one of the country's best-selling albums. Known for their dynamic performances, they were the first Asian and non-English-speaking group to sell out stadiums like Wembley and the Rose Bowl. Apart from music, BTS collaborates with UNICEF on the Love Myself campaign and has addressed several United Nations General Assembly sessions. Recognized as cultural icons, they have been featured on Time's most influential people lists and received the South Korean Order of Cultural Merit. In 2022, the group began a temporary hiatus for mandatory military service, with new music planned for spring 2026.
