The Verve were an influential English rock band formed in Wigan in 1990 by Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones, and Peter Salisbury, with Simon Tong joining during their first reunion. Emerging with a psychedelic and shoegaze style on their debut album A Storm in Heaven, they reached major success with 1997’s Urban Hymns, which produced iconic singles like Bitter Sweet Symphony, The Drugs Don’t Work, Sonnet, and Lucky Man. Urban Hymns became one of the best-selling UK albums, leading to Brit Awards and a Grammy nomination. Despite critical and commercial acclaim, The Verve faced internal struggles, legal battles, and multiple breakups, disbanding soon after their peak, briefly reuniting in 2007 before splitting again in 2009.
