Sylvia Striplin

Sylvia Striplin (March 23, 1954 – March 2, 2013) was a celebrated jazz, soul, and R and B vocalist from New York. Growing up in the Bronx after her family lost their Harlem home to a fire, she developed her talents early, writing songs and performing with friends in her neighborhood. She studied piano and performed in school, later attending City College of New York, where she gained recognition for her singing. In the 1970s, Striplin worked as a backup singer and was cast as Dorothy in touring productions of The Wiz. She became a member of Aquarian Dream and worked with Roy Ayers in Eighties Ladies, eventually signing to his Uno Melodic label. Her solo album, Give Me Your Love, includes the classic "You Can't Turn Me Away," which gained lasting influence through samples in hip-hop and covers by artists like Erykah Badu. The song was featured in video games and films, while her work has been sampled by producers such as Armand Van Helden. Striplin’s final known release was Keep Pushing, marking the end of her impactful recording career.
