Stephen James Howe, born in 1947 in North London, is a renowned English guitarist and backing vocalist best known for his influential role in the progressive rock band Yes. After teaching himself guitar from age 12, he began his career in the 1960s with London-based bands such as the Syndicats, Tomorrow, and Bodast. Joining Yes in 1970, Howe’s distinctive mix of acoustic and electric styles became a defining part of the band’s sound and success, with many classic Yes songs co-written by him. He is Yes’s longest-serving member, performing with the group over multiple decades. Outside of Yes, Howe found success with bands like Asia, GTR, and Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe. He has released numerous solo albums and collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Martin Taylor, and Queen. In addition to leading the Steve Howe Trio, he remains active as a performer. In 2017, Howe was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes.
