Louis Prima

Louis Prima

Louis Prima (December 7, 1910 – August 24, 1978) was a dynamic American trumpeter, singer, entertainer, and bandleader. Beginning in New Orleans jazz, he became known for infusing swing, jump blues, early rhythm and blues, boogie-woogie, rock and roll, and Italian folk music into his performances. Throughout his long career, Prima led bands of various sizes, from jazz ensembles and swing combos to big bands, and played a key role in popularizing jump blues in the 1940s and 1950s. In Las Vegas, he became a celebrated lounge act. Prima stood out for proudly showcasing his Italian and Sicilian heritage in his music, which inspired other ethnic musicians to embrace their roots. He also gained fame as the voice of King Louie in Disney's The Jungle Book.
