Collegium Musicum

Collegium Musicum

Collegium Musicum was a Slovak art rock and progressive rock band founded by Marián Varga and Fedor Frešo in Czechoslovakia in 1969. Renowned for their intricate, mostly instrumental music centered on Varga's keyboards, the group became famous for innovative adaptations of classical pieces by composers like Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky, and Bartók. Though they remained outside the mainstream, Collegium Musicum were highly influential in the Czech and Slovak music scenes during the 1970s and were often compared to Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The lineup featured top Slovak musicians such as Fedor Frešo on bass and František Griglák on guitar. Celebrated for powerful live performances, the band experienced a revival in the late 1990s and early 2000s before disbanding after Varga's death in 2017.
