Genelec 8320 ARwM

The Genelec 8320A RAW is a compact Smart Active Monitor that brings professional nearfield monitoring into tight spaces without sacrificing accuracy. Its recycled aluminium enclosure houses a 105 mm bass driver and 19 mm metal-dome tweeter, each driven by a dedicated 50 W Class-D amplifier, while SAM™ technology and GLM™ calibration tailor the response to your room.

  • 100 dB SPL with 55 Hz – 23 kHz frequency response (-6 dB) for full-range nearfield monitoring
  • Bi-amplified design with 50 W Class-D amps per driver and an active 2.9 kHz crossover
  • Smart Active Monitoring (SAM™) integrates with GLM™ software for automatic room calibration
  • Unpainted RAW recycled aluminium enclosure with Iso-Pod™ decoupling stand and DCW™ waveguide

Genelec 8320A RAW — Compact Smart Active Monitor for Critical Listening

The Genelec 8320A RAW is a compact Smart Active Monitor (SAM™) engineered for nearfield monitoring in studios where space is at a premium. As the entry point into Genelec's networked monitoring ecosystem, this model combines a recycled aluminium enclosure with built-in DSP and GLM™ calibration to deliver transparent, room-adapted sound. This model is the right choice for producers, engineers, and content creators who need accurate monitoring in small rooms, mobile rigs, or acoustically untreated spaces.

What Sets This Monitor Apart

Unlike conventional passive monitors, this SAM™ design integrates DSP, active crossovers, and networking directly into the cabinet. The Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE™) and Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW™) work together to widen the uncoloured sweet spot, while Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS™) puts the monitor into a low-power standby when no input is detected. The RAW finish exposes the recycled aluminium enclosure without paint, reducing the environmental footprint of the manufacturing process.

Driver Configuration and Amplification

Bi-amplification means each driver gets its own dedicated amplifier, eliminating the compromises of a single shared amp and the phase issues of passive crossovers. The result is tighter transient response and a more honest representation of the source material at the listening position.

  • Bass Driver: 105 mm (4") cone — handles low frequencies
  • Treble Driver: 19 mm (3/4") metal dome — reproduces high frequencies with low distortion and wide dispersion from the integrated waveguide
  • Amplifier Power: 50 W Class-D bass + 50 W Class-D treble — separate amps for each driver joined by an active 2.9 kHz crossover

Frequency Response and Accuracy

The accuracy spec tells you how flat the monitor measures across its operating range — a tighter tolerance means less coloration between what's on the recording and what you hear. Combined with the wide sweet spot from the DCW™ waveguide, this lets you make mix decisions with confidence even when moving around the desk.

  • Frequency Response: 55 Hz – 23 kHz (-6 dB)
  • Accuracy of Frequency Response: ±1.5 dB (66 Hz – 20 kHz) — tight tolerance for reliable mix translation between rooms
  • Maximum SPL: 100 dB — sufficient headroom for tracking and mixing at nearfield distances

Connectivity, Calibration, and Physical Design

The RJ45 control network is what makes SAM™ different from a regular active monitor — it lets the GLM™ software measure your room and apply corrective EQ, level matching, and time-of-flight alignment to every speaker in the system. Positioning is easy on small desks, in broadcast suites, or on mobile rigs thanks to the compact footprint and Iso-Pod™ stand.

  • Audio Input: 1 x XLR analogue — balanced connection from your audio interface or monitor controller
  • Control Ports: 2 x RJ45
  • Dimensions: H 242 x W 151 x D 142 mm (with Iso-Pod™)
  • Weight: 3.2 kg — light enough for mobile recording and location work

Who This Monitor Is For

This compact SAM monitor is the right choice for project studio owners, podcast editors, and electronic music producers who need a nearfield monitor that adapts to imperfect rooms. Its GLM™ calibration workflow makes it especially valuable for engineers who move between studios or work in untreated bedrooms, home offices, or broadcast booths. Pairing it with the matching 7350A subwoofer extends the low end for hip-hop, electronic, and film mixing, while the RAW finish appeals to creators who prefer an industrial aesthetic over traditional painted cabinets.

Genelec and the Smart Active Monitoring Philosophy

Founded in Finland in 1978, Genelec has built its reputation on active monitoring designs that move amplification, crossover, and protection circuitry into the cabinet itself. The SAM™ (Smart Active Monitoring) concept extends this philosophy by adding networked DSP and AutoCal™ room correction to the company's nearfield and main monitor lines. The 8320A sits at the entry point of the SAM™ family, bringing that calibration-driven approach to compact, project-studio-friendly form factors.
