Daryl Hall & John Oates, known as Hall & Oates, were a highly successful American rock and soul duo from Philadelphia, formed in 1970. Daryl Hall, the primary lead vocalist, and John Oates, guitarist and backing vocalist, became icons of the late twentieth century with their signature blend of rock, R and B, and pop. Writing most of their own material, the pair achieved massive commercial success during the mid 1970s through late 1980s, scoring six US number one singles including Rich Girl, Kiss on My List, Private Eyes, I Cant Go for That No Can Do, Maneater, and Out of Touch. In total, 29 of their singles reached the US Top 40, and 16 entered the Top Ten. Their albums have garnered multiple platinum and gold certifications, and their popularity extended overseas with several UK hits. Hall & Oates collaborated with well-known musicians and songwriters, including G E Smith, Tom T Bone Wolk, and the Allen sisters, shaping their distinctive sound. Over their career, they became recognized as the most successful duo in music history, earning inductions into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2024, the duo announced they would no longer perform together.
